Happy New Year! Wow! We're at the start of 2025 (2024 was a whoosh!) and I'm setting my goals. (More specifics to come later this month.)

Since I made a pivot to my writing from business communications in 2024, I feel compelled to set writing goals for this year, so I stay on track with my new creative direction. I started last month with my brag sheet, which helped me identify where to focus this year. (You can use the 2024 Author Brag Sheet, too.)

Still, I've found it challenging to articulate writing goals for the future. That's why I did some research and luckily, I came across a few terrific authors sharing their thoughts about goal setting and their goals. If you find goal-setting a challenge, too, you may find these helpful:

  1. Looking for some goal-setting inspiration? Read ALLi Members Set Bold Goals for 2025. This article from the Alliance for Independent Authors features several writers at different stages in their careers who highlight their objectives for 2025. Even if you're focused on traditional publishing, these authors' discussions have meaning for any writer's career and will spark ideas to push yourself further.

  2. If you'd prefer to walk through one author's approach to setting goals, try 7 Author Goals for 2025 and How to Achieve Them. Michael Brockbank of the Writing Sanctuary discusses what he plans to do and why, then commits to how he will monitor his progress.

  3. For goal-setting nuts and bolts, review Setting Reasonable Writing Goals for 2025: A Step-by-Step Guide. In this post, Plot Geek Academy does a deep dive into SMART goals, suggests how to break those goals down into incremental steps, and offers organizational tips.

  4. Are you ready to think about bigger picture goals? Read Dreaming Big for 2025? Here’s How to Turn Your Writing Goals into Reality This page from Indie Author Magazine leads you to three articles that will inform how you approach your 2025 goals. The first is about annual goal-setting and how it relates to a five-year author business plan. The second piece explores designing and maintaining a balanced and healthy writing life as a goal. And the third addresses the author's mindset.

Whatever your goals are for 2025, keep in mind research shows your chances of succeeding increase with the right motivation and support, which means your writing group can help you achieve your objectives. I wrote about this concept a few months ago and my ebook, The Write Group, goes into more detail. Bottom line: If you have a writing team around you, consider sharing highlights of your goals with your writing buddies. The support from your writing group can help you ensure your success in 2025.
