New to writing? You've probably gotten some advice about joining a writing circle. Fabulous. What do you do? You throw yourself into the nearest group, fingers crossed, hoping for the best.
If things don't turn out the way you expect, you might jump into the blame game: The schedule was inconvenient, the format was inconsistent, and worst of all, your writing wasn't good enough.
Ewww.
There's another way to approach the writing group and avoid the blame game. Start with setting some writing goals before you get involved with a circle and give yourself a roadmap for your creative journey with the group. This takes a little effort, but it's worth it. Reflect on what you want to achieve with your writing and how the others in the group can help you. Clear goals are essential for staying focused, whether you're completing your debut novel, testing new skills, or exploring an unfamiliar genre. Knowing what you want from other writers will help you make progress.
What are your writing group goals? Let me know in the comments!
